Life sometimes seems to rush by, filled with things that must be done, no time to stop for a breath. It is easy to get so caught up in the superficial things, tasks that don't have lasting meaning. And then, I'm reminded of something essential: the deep connection we have with others when we allow ourselves to be completely present.
Last Thursday, I received a gift. What exactly it is isn't important to the story, but it reminded me of how I used to listen, how I would give my focus and be present in the moment. I've spent the past few days reveling in this feeling. The gift sits on my desk at school, a reminder to be present. I've noticed that life is smoother, I'm happier, I'm enjoying every moment and I'm spending those moments with my friends and family, my students, and my co-workers.
Today is my birthday, it seems like this is a great day for reflecting (it's the second annual birthday blog entry).
My epiphany this year is that by being present we give ourselves a gift, and we allow others in turn to give us something special: themselves.
Thank you, each of you, for my birthday gift.
